OUR ENVIRONMENT

At Pitlands Barns we are committed to providing a good quality service whilst seeking to minimise the risk of possible pollution in our policies and activities.  As part of this commitment, Pitlands Barns is a member of the Green Tourism Business Scheme, which provides accreditation and encouragement for tourism businesses to reduce the environmental impact of their activities.

As part of our commitment to continuous environmental improvement, Pitlands Barns has installed the latest, highly efficient sewerage system which returns clean water to the aquifiers and removes waste. All the barns have dual flush loos and we have installed a rain water harvester to maximize water efficiency. We hope you will help us in this by using water carefully during your stay.

Heating and hot water is supplied by a combination of solar panels, air source heat pumps and wood burning stoves. The coppiced wood is supplied from a woodland maintenance and restoration scheme undertaken by the farm.

The barns are insulated to the highest standards in order to reduce carbon emissions. Low energy light bulbs are used throughout the barns. All our appliances are A energy rated, and we use environmentally friendly washing products and cleaning materials.

We comply with the requirements of environmental legislation and approved codes of practice and work hard to enhance the biodiversity of the farm, which is in Natural England's Higher Level Stewardship scheme. We are also members of LEAF (linking environment and farming), which promotes environmentally responsible farming.

We keep marketing material to a minimum and where possible, booking information and communication will be by e-mail, so reducing the use of paper.

We recycle as much of our waste as possible using the various schemes available, and we encourage sustainable tourism by providing for walkers and cyclists and offering a pick up service from train and bus stations. There are beautiful walks around the farm and surrounding area, with two local pubs within easy walking distance, and a village shop a couple of miles away.

At Pitlands Barns we encourage guests to consider their environmental impact and where possible to:

Reduce, reuse, recycle

  • Compost green kitchen waste.
  • Use the separate bins provided for bottles, cans and paper.
  • Leave hazardous waste such as batteries with us for safe disposal at our local recycling centre.
  • Use water wisely.

Chill out, switch off

  • Conserve energy by switching off lights and line drying the laundry.
  • Use individual room thermostats to regulate temperature.
  • Use low temperature dishwasher and washing machine programmes.

Stay local, eat local, buy local, see local

  • Support the local food producers, restaurants and attractions.

Adhere to the Countryside Code

  • Help us all to respect, protect and enjoy our countryside.

We welcome suggestions from our guests as to how we can improve our environmental policy and protect the environment and increase the enjoyment of your stay.
